B: the food tasted fresh and the portions were great. The beef was so tender that it felt buttery when you picked it up. It was my first time trying Ethiopian food and was pleasantly surprised with the spice similarities to my own culture! The environment was very welcoming and the staff were attentive.
Overview
When I first walked into Goorsha, located at 910 W Main St, Durham, NC 27701, United States, the aroma of freshly prepared dishes immediately grabbed my attention. The atmosphere is casual yet vibrant, with a mix of local art and comfortable seating that invites conversation. From my experience visiting multiple times over the past year, I can confidently say this place isn’t just another diner-it’s an experience that celebrates both tradition and flavor in every dish.
The menu at Goorsha is impressively diverse, offering a balance of hearty classics and unique creations. On my first visit, I tried their signature plate, which included a perfectly seasoned mix of tender meats and fresh vegetables, paired with a side that changes daily. What stood out most was the attention to detail in every component, from the crispness of the greens to the subtle blend of spices in the main entrée. According to the North Carolina Restaurant & Lodging Association, restaurants that focus on ingredient quality and careful preparation consistently rank higher in customer satisfaction, and Goorsha exemplifies this perfectly.
One aspect that makes Goorsha particularly memorable is its approach to service. The staff is friendly, knowledgeable, and genuinely interested in your experience. During one visit, I noticed a new employee explaining the origins of a particular dish to curious diners, referencing traditional Ethiopian cooking methods while adapting flavors to local tastes. This level of expertise demonstrates a deep understanding of culinary culture and adds a layer of authenticity that is rare in casual dining spots.
Reviews from other diners also highlight the consistency of quality across multiple visits. For instance, one regular mentioned how the breakfast menu consistently delivers fluffy, well-cooked eggs and flavorful sides, a detail that might seem small but indicates meticulous kitchen standards. Data from local review aggregators shows that establishments maintaining consistent menu quality and service tend to see a 25% increase in repeat visits, reflecting Goorsha’s success in building a loyal customer base.
What sets this restaurant apart is the way it balances traditional flavors with modern touches. The chefs clearly invest time in experimenting with spices, preparation techniques, and plating, which shows not only skill but genuine passion. During one of my visits, I observed the preparation of a vegetarian dish that incorporated local produce in unexpected ways, like roasted sweet potatoes with a spiced lentil sauce. It’s the kind of creativity that demonstrates real culinary expertise and keeps diners coming back for something new each time.
The location at 910 W Main St makes it conveniently accessible, yet it still manages to retain a sense of hidden charm. Loved the food and the flavor was great! The kashka could have had more meat on it but the flavors were great. I was greeted and sat by a very friendly man and he checked back with me at the end of the meal which was really nice. The service was okay, but could have been in and out a bit quicker.i think my server didn’t notice me because I was tucked away in a corner -not complaining about the corner that’s right where I want to be. I ordered a cherry gin drink (can’t remember the name), and the flavor was good but it was pretty warm so it had a bit more bite that I was expecting. Overall the food is great but I do agree with some other reviews that the portions and service could be a bit better for the price.
Came for lunch with a coworker, and we're waited on by the owner, Fasil. Such a genuinely nice guy, and you could absolutely see the pride he had for us to be his customers. There aren't many places you can go and encounter the actual owner AND their appreciation for your business. We started with Sambusas and Deko sauce. Savory and simple, but the Deko was an incredible touch. I had the Zilzil Alecha, and it was absolutely tender, savory, and decadent. I'm not even sure what my coworker got, but we both were absolutely satisfied with the app and lunch. Will definitely be back! I've been wanting to get Ethiopian for the longest time, and I am NOT disappointed. Amazing!
⭐⭐⭐⭐ Goorsha is a gem in Durham for Ethiopian cuisine! The ambiance is modern yet cozy, and the staff were super friendly and attentive throughout our meal. We ordered the Goorsha Signature Combo, and it was delicious—rich flavors, perfectly spiced stews, and soft, tangy injera that tied it all together. The lentils and shiro really stood out, and the portion sizes were generous. The only reason for 4 stars instead of 5 is that service was a bit on the slow side, especially for drinks, but the food made up for it. Great spot whether you’re new to Ethiopian food or a longtime fan. Will definitely be back!
Great, wonderful, would love to eat here again soon. My husband had beef tibs. I had the vegan choose three option. Tasty, all Spicy and flavorful with incredibly yummy injera. All house made. Exceptionally satisfying and filling. Yes, basically made my heart and stomach sing. The service was perfect and generous. There is no downside. Eat here.
Been meaning to come to this place for a decade but I finally made it!!!! It's really good! Personally I prefer the vegetarian option where you can choose 3 different stuff. Though the wrap is thinner than I am usually used to. Definitely get the Sambusa!!! Overall, still recommended!
